Have you ever heard the term ‘conservatoire’? Do you know what it means? A conservatoire, according to the Oxford Languages is a college for the study of classical music or other arts, typically in the continental European tradition. It is a specialist institution that trains students in music and performing arts. 

Leeds conservatoire went by many names. It was first known as Leeds Music center from 1961 to 1971, City of Leeds College of Music from 1971 to 1997, and Leeds College of music from 1997 to 2020 before it finally settled to be called Leeds conservative.

Following this change in name was the launch of new degree courses in Musical theatre, acting, and actor-musician. It was founded in the year 1965 by Joseph Stones.

Leeds conservatoire is a higher education music conservatoire located in the Quarry Hill district of Leeds, England. 

It provides short courses and programs for adults and school-age musicians outside its educational provisions. It also hosts a seasonal program of concerts, largely in its 350-seat auditorium ‘The venue’.

IN the year 2009, the conservatoire made plans to merge with Bradford university. However, the following year, it received approval from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to merge with Leeds City College instead.

ON the 1st of August, 2011 Leeds Conservatoire lost its status as a Higher Education Institution after it merged with Leeds City College.

Leeds conservatoire became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Leeds city college. As a result, all undergraduate and postgraduate degrees were validated, first by Bradford and seconded by the University of Hull.

Leeds conservatoire is presently a member of the Luminate Education Group. In 2011 however, the conservatoire regained its status as a Higher education institution.

It has a number of affiliations, partnering with Berklee College of Music as a part of the Berklee International Network. Leeds conservatoire is also a part of Conservatories UK and in full partnership with the European Association of Conservatoires.    

Leeds conservatoire boasts itself as the first music institution in Europe to offer a bachelor’s degree in the academic study of Jazz music and ranks as the first conservatoire in the United Kingdom to offer a degree in Popular music. Like every other higher education institution, Leeds conservatoire boasts of a number of rankings. These rankings are somewhat proof of the conservatoire’s effectiveness and capacity. It ranks 153rd in the country and 4164th in the world.

Eligible countries: 

All countries aside from the host country (United Kingdom) are eligible for registration.

Eligible courses:

 All undergraduate courses the Leeds conservatoire offers (BA degree programs)

Eligibility criteria: 

To be eligible for the award, the applicant must have registered for a BA degree program of choice.

Value of the Scholarship:

 The award amount of $1000 to $3200 is provided for the grant.

How to apply: 

As an applicant, you must have gotten admission to study an undergraduate course in the Leeds Conservatoire.

The following documents must be submitted by applicants to aid the possibility of gaining the award:

Academic transcripts of all previous schools attended and a copy of my passport.

Admission requirements: 

Applicants must fulfill all the entry requirements for international students that the university has given. The entry requirements are as follows:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the beginning of their studies.
  • For countries that are not major English speaking countries, the following English proficiency tests are required:
  • IELTS Academic/ IELTS Academic for UKVI
  • Pearson PTE academic
  • Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (ISE II)
  • Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (ISE III)
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)

For countries that are major English speaking countries, the following are required:

  • At least a pass mark on the Secure English Language Test (SELT)
  • GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5
  • Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English gained through study at a United Kingdom-based school (Candidate must have been 18 years at the year of starting).

Candidates must prove they can read, write, speak and understand English to a certain level on the common European framework of reference for languages scale (CEFR).

For better clarification, below is a list of countries whose applicants do not need to prove their knowledge of English provided they have completed a qualification equivalent to a United Kingdom degree. They are:

  • New Zealand
  • St Kitts and Nevis
  • St Lucia
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • United Kingdom
  • The United States of America, amongst many others.
