Carleton University is a public research university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1942 as Carleton College, the institution initially activated as a private, non-denominational evening college to serve returning World War II veterans. Carleton was leased as a university by the provincial government in 1952 through The Carleton University Act, which was then amended in 1957, giving the institution its existing name. 

The university is termed for the now-dissolved Carleton County, which included the city of Ottawa at the time the university was founded. Carleton County, in turn, was entitled in honor of Guy Carleton, the 1st Baron Dorchester, who was Governor General of The Canada’s from 1786 to 1796. The university moved to its present campus in 1959, growing quickly in size during the 1960s as the Ontario government augmented support for post-secondary institutions and prolonged access to higher education.

Carleton proposes a miscellaneous range of academic programs, and is planned into six faculties. During its original construction in 1959, the campus entailed of three buildings, the MacOdrum Library, the Tory Building, and Paterson Hall, forming a quadrangle sited at the heart of the university’s academic buildings. Since then, the university has extended to forty-seven buildings, the newest addition being the Health Sciences Building, which was initiated in 2018.

The campus is available to road traffic through two entries individually positioned at Bronson Avenue and Colonel by Drive. Carleton’s campus comprises a series of surface roads to enable traffic in and out of the university, the most seriously used of them being Campus Avenue, which was rehabilitated to a single-direction road in 2019 to comfort overcrowding.

Some OC Transpo bus lines, including the 7, 10, and 111, serve the campus unswervingly, in addition to the O-Train’s Carleton station, situated at the center of campus.
