Hertie School of Governance Doctoral Scholarship in Germany 2022

The Hertie School of Governance in Germany is welcoming applications for the Hertie School of Governance Doctoral Scholarship program for the 2022/23 academic year.

It provides demanding academic training and familiarises candidates with leading-edge approaches in public policy research. The program welcomes outstanding applicants devoted to research on public policy and related research questions. It is interdisciplinary in nature, but provides a specialisation within law, economics, political science, and sociology.

A lot of projects are structured to connect openly with the public and private sectors and civil society. Faculty publish in prominent global journals, add to academic and policy workshops, and are constantly asked for their expertise by government and media.

PhD education at the Hertie School is run as a structured program. In the first year, PhD candidates prepare for their research and thesis writing with devoted methods, research design and skills workshops. In the subsequent years, an increasing amount of time is alloted to autonomous work on the PhD thesis. Researchers constantly present their research findings at workshops or foreign conferences. To network with prominent scholars in their area of studies they may undergo research stays overseas.

The program is completely funded (10 three-year allowances).

Candidates working in the following fields are specially encouraged to put in for the Hertie School of Governance Doctoral Scholarship program:

  • European Integration
  • International Security (particularly Empirical Conflict Studies)
  • Fundamental Rights (particularly from comparative perspectives)
  • Sustainability, Climate, and Energy
  • Digital Governance
  • Political Economy and Social Policy

Selection process

Your application will be assessed in line with the following conditions: 

1. Thematic alignment of the dissertation proposal with the research interests of Hertie School’s faculty or Centres of Competence

2. Candidate’s academic performance and references

3. Quality of research proposal

4. Overall motivation

Based on the assessment, they carry out interviews with suitable applicants. These interviews will occur at the latest in March of 2021. Resolutions on admissions are carried out on the basis of academic distinction and the availability of prospective supervisors. The final decision will be mailed to you by the PhD Office.

They are interested in candidates with an extraordinarily strong master’s degree (or equivalent) in law, economics, sociology, political science, public administration, management, or similar fields. The master’s degree program has to be concluded before you enter the program.

  • Research proposal (1,500-2,500 words excl. references)
  • Curriculum Vitae (max. two pages)
  • Letter of Motivation (max. 250-400 words)
  • Transcripts and certificates of university degrees
  • English proficiency evidence (may be submitted after the closing date)
  • PDF Education History

Furthermore to your application through the portal, they need two academic letters of reference (in English) to consider your application. These letters have to be mailed by your referees to phd-applications[at]hertie-school[dot]org latest by 31 January 2022. They do not take letters of reference mailed by the candidate or reference letters that are mailed after the deadline.
