The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is taking applications for Reckitt-LSHTM PhD studentships from applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa. The awards are fully-funded 4-year PhD studentships to commence a research degree program on 3 January 2022. There are three studentships available.
The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is famous for its research, graduate programs and continuing education in public and international health.
Their mission is to advance health and health equity in the United Kingdom and globally; working in partnership to attain excellence in public and international health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.
LSHTM has pre-chosen eight research projects that address the connections between hygiene and health in Sub-Saharan Africa in one or more of these areas:
- The role of cleanliness in the prevention and spread of communicable diseases and their consequences
- Hygiene behaviours and hygiene behaviour change
- The intersection of hygiene and wider social and economic impacts
Candidates putting in for the Reckitt-LSHTM PhD studentships should choose one of the eight projects listed on the website that matches their interests, skills and experience and then develop the project further in their application.
Benefits of Reckitt-LSHTM PhD studentships
The Reckitt-LSHTM PhD studentships have been made achievable through the generosity of Reckitt, through an unlimited donation to LSHTM.
Each PhD studentship will comprise:
- Tuition fees at the LSHTM overseas fee rate for the length of the research project (up to 4 years)
- An annual tax-free allowance equal to the UKRI stipend level (inclusive of London weighting)
- Up to GBP20,000 for research costs, travel and/or training
Eligibility for Reckitt-LSHTM PhD studentships
Candidates have to be citizens of a nation in Sub-Saharan Africa and meet the minimum LSHTM entry criteria. Additional skills and academic conditions are stated for each project. Please check the specific project details for further information.
How to Apply for Reckitt-LSHTM PhD studentships
Details about the PhD program structure at LSHTM, and also application instruction and a link to the portal, can be located on the School’s Research Degrees and Doctoral College pages.
To put in for this studentship, candidates should submit an application for research degree study through the LSHTM application portal. Applications not handed in through this portal will not be given consideration.
In their applications, candidates should create a research proposal in line with one of the eight projects listed above. Applications not related to any of the eight projects will not be given consideration. The research proposal must be uploaded as a supporting credential in section 8 of the online application form.
Candidates must also add a personal statement in section 6 of the online form in which they explain their long-term career objectives and their vision for adding to research into hygiene and health in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Candidates must apply through the LSHTM Faculty (ITD, EPH or PHP) of the primary supervisor listed for their selected project. They should also indicate ‘Reckitt-LSHTM Hygiene & Health PhD Studentship’ under ‘LSHTM Scholarship name’ in the ‘Funding Details’ part of the online application form.
Unfinished applications will not be given for this studentship. To be considered finished, an application should show all important documents have been attached, and the application submitted, by the scholarship closing date. Candidates should note that referees will be gotten in touch with only once an application has been submitted. They have to complete the online form. A letter in lieu of this will not be acceptable. Candidates are advised to contact their referees in advance to notify them of the request and the scholarship closing date.
Applications under this scheme will only be evaluated and processed after the closing date. All applications submitted prior to the closing date will be given consideration equally, irrespective of their submission date. By submitting an application for this funding, candidates agree to its terms and conditions.
