Victor Cohn Prize in Canada 2021

The Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) is taking applications for the Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting in 2021.

The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing is devoted to advancing the quality and quantity of science news getting to the society. Managed and advised by eminent journalists and scientists, CASW creates and funds programs that inspire accurate and educational writing about advances in technology, science, medicine and the environment.

The Council’s impacts to science writing and public comprehension of sciencewere recognized in 2003 when it got the high-status Public Service Award of the National Science Board. The NSB counsels the president and Congress on science and monitors the research programs of the National Science Foundation.

CASW created the Victor Cohn Prize in 2000. The prize, which is awarded yearly, looks to honor a writer for a body of work put out or broadcast within the past five years which, for reasons of exceptional clarity, breadth of coverage, accuracy, originality, enterprise, insight and narrative power, has made a deep and lasting contribution to public awareness and comprehension of critical developments in medical science and their influence on human health and well-being. Qualified writing includes work featuring in digital media.

About Victor Cohn

As science and medical correspondent for the Minneapolis Tribune and then science editor, science and medical correspondent and health columnist for the Washington Post, Victor Cohn differentiated himself for the clarity, robustness, honesty, fairness and efficiency of his reporting. He was very much at the vanguard of coverage of almost every major advance in medicine over the past five decades, from the success of the Salk polio vaccine and the first human trials with cancer chemotherapy to the extermination of smallpox and the editing of human genes.

He was the first threefold recipient of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award for newspaper reporting and the first two-time recipient of both the AAAS-Westinghouse (now the AAAS Kavli) Science Journalism Award and the National Association of Science Writer’s Science-in-Society Award.

In 1959, Cohn co-established the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. In 1961, he was voted to a two-year term as president of NASW. Cohn is the writer of several books, like News and Numbers, a generally used journalists’ guide for interpreting and broadcasting statistical data in medical and scientific reports.

Worth of Victor Cohn Prize

  • The beneficiary gets an award of $3,000 and a certificate.
  • The prize is awarded at a joint awards ceremony held together with ScienceWriters, a conference that merges CASW’s New Horizons in Science briefings and the National Association of Science Writers yearly seminars.
  • Beneficiaries’ travel expenses to the award ceremony are provided.

Eligibility for Victor Cohn Prize

The following are qualified for the Victor Cohn Prize;

  • Editors, scientists, colleagues, and others familiar with the contestant’s body of work may put forward nominations.
  • Candidates may nominate themselves, but are advised to submit a minimum of one letter of support from a well-informed colleague.
  • Nominators of contestants for the 2021 prize may hand in up to five examples of the contestant’s journalistic undertakings, all published or aired since January 2015.
  • Books are not eligible.
  • Submitted works have to be published in English-language media that is accessible to a US audience.
  • Nomination letters of should comprise an evaluation of the nominee’s body of work together with a biographical sketch.

How to Apply for Victor Cohn Prize

  • Nominators and contestants may hand in materials at; during the submission window starting January 1.
  • Letters of support may be submitted either as part of the nomination package or through a separate submission form available for recommenders.

Application Deadline

The closing date for submission of nominations for the 2021 prize is June 30.
